No drone debris had been found near the ship sunk in the Black Sea, Minister of Defence Dimitar Stoyanov said at a briefing on Friday.
The briefing was held at the Chaika naval base in Varna, with representatives of the Air Force and the Navy also taking part.
Stoyanov said they had been unable to find drone debris that would allow the drone to be identified.
He said it was inappropriate to speculate on matters of national security and that statements should be based on evidence. Both Ukraine and Russia had denied involvement, he added.
Stoyanov said he had not met the chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. As far as he knew, only the prime minister had held such a meeting.
Taking a question, Stoyanov said that there are already enough companies in Bulgaria that manufacture anti-drone systems. According to him, both the Navy and the Army have anti-drone systems that were purchased from Bulgarian companies. “However, this does not mean that we are limiting ourselves to just that. We are also receiving equipment from the US under the Foreign Military Financing programme; we expect one system to arrive and be deployed with the Air Force,” the Minister added. He noted that anti-drone systems are not a panacea because their development lags significantly behind technological advances in drone technology.
Stoyanov recalled that drones have been shot down in Poland, Romania, Moldova, and the Baltic countries. “No one can guarantee 100% protection. What the Bulgarian Army is doing right now is providing site-specific protection, similar to our air defence,” the Minister said.
The Minister said that there has been an increase in the intensity of strikes already in the exclusive economic zones of Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkiye, and he believes this will continue. “The war is simply continuing in full force, and while until recently the Russian side was mainly targeting the Black Sea ports of Chernomorets and Odesa, the war is now spreading in every direction,” said Stoyanov.
