Balgarianovinite.com The rift within Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) is disappointing and erodes trust in its cause, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) Chair Atanas Atanassov wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
Atanassov said Bulgaria faces sharply increased geopolitical, corruption and economic risks, while one political force holds an absolute majority in the National Assembly for the first time since 1997 and is set to form its own government. In this context, he said, a strong democratic opposition is “critically necessary” to curb abuse of power and keep the country on course.
He said DSB has always acted responsibly in its coalition partnerships, both within Democratic Bulgaria and in the broader CC-DB format, and has not risked coalition unity or joined public clashes that undermine trust.
Atanassov added that the democratic community must act together ahead of serious challenges, including the upcoming presidential elections. Fragmentation, internal rows and short-term tactical calculations, he said, put at risk the strategic goal of a strong, democratic and European Bulgaria.
The comments came after the National Council of Yes, Bulgaria decided last week to task the party with proposing a coalition agreement to DSB and Continue the Change. Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev said on Monday that a merger between Yes, Bulgaria, DSB and Continue the Change is possible if all sides agree.
CC-DB co-Floor Leader Nikolay Denkov said Continue the Change and Yes, Bulgaria are “very far” from becoming one party, although they share common goals. He said the parties are not talking about a split, but about working together while developing their own strengths.
CC-DB co-Floor Leader Nadejda Iordanova said on Monday that CC-DB should be a constructive and active opposition force. She said her proposal is for the coalition to remain in a single group on the basis of a clear coalition agreement.
