Balgarianovinite.com The Interior Ministry has received the full automotive technical expert report on the truck that blocked traffic towards Sofia at the Vitinya Tunnel on the Hemus Motorway after the Easter holidays, acting Interior Ministry Secretary General Georgi Kandev wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. The data from the report, as well as the results of the initial investigative experiment, show clearly and unequivocally that the vehicle was fully roadworthy at the time of the incident, he added.
A truck driver stopped his vehicle in the Vitinya Tunnel on the Hemus Motorway on April 13 citing a technical malfunction, and was arrested after disobeying a police order. When an Road Infrastructure Agency crew arrived at the scene, the driver reportedly denied them access to the truck and refused to let them tow it out of the tunnel or move it out himself. This led police to step in to restore traffic and prevent more serious problems for other drivers. Later on April 13, Kandev commented that this took place on a day of intensive travel across the country and during peak hours, which “raises serious suspicions of deliberate actions aimed at obstructing traffic”.
On Tuesday, the Interior Ministry Secretary General further said that this fact raises new questions within the framework of the pre-trial proceedings already initiated by the prosecution. “Is the case now entering a next phase of analysis and procedural actions, in which an assessment should be made as to whether there are grounds for bringing charges?” Kandev asked.
A day after the incident, Kandev wrote that the owner of the company using the lorry is a member of a sectional election commission from a party represented in Parliament. Caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev told Bulgarian National Television that the truck had been roadworthy and described the incident as “sabotage”.
“The aim may be to discredit the current caretaker Government, or possibly to discredit certain political forces which the propaganda of certain parties associates with this Government,” Dechev suggested.
