In Bulgaria, daily alcohol consumption is reported by 4.6 % of the population aged 16 and over. The countries where alcohol is consumed most frequently are Poland (16.0 %), Italy (7.9 %), as well as Belgium and Denmark (7.5 % each), according to Eurostat data.
In 2025, 4.8 % of people aged 16 and over in the EU consumed alcohol every day. The share of people who consumed alcohol on a weekly basis was 19.2 %, while 21.8 % consumed alcohol monthly. The majority of people either consumed alcohol less than once a month (20.7 %) or had never consumed alcohol or had not done so in 2025 (33.5 %).
In the EU, daily, weekly and monthly alcohol consumption is more common among men than women. In 2025, 56.5 % of men consumed alcohol at least once a month, compared with 35.9 % of women.
The share of the EU population consuming alcohol daily increases with age, from 0.8 % among people aged 16 to 24 to 8.9 % among those aged 65 and over.
People at risk of poverty or social exclusion are less likely to consume alcohol than those who are not at risk. As a result, the share of people who had never consumed alcohol or had not done so during the previous year was significantly higher among those at risk of poverty or social exclusion (47.5 %) than among the rest of the population (29.9 %).
