The Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy will sign a contract for the construction of a new research ship, said its rector, Fleet Admiral Prof. Kalin Kalinov, during the official opening of the new academic year at the Academy on Monday. The event was also attended by Varna Regional Governor Mario Smarkov, Deputy Mayor Sofia Koleva, representatives of the academic community in the city and the maritime industry.
Kalinov stated that the Naval Academy faces many challenges, one of which is the new research ship, as the school has not built any ships so far. He added that a decision has been made at the university to establish the Maritime Security Centre. According to him, a meeting with experts is coming up to decide where the project will be financed. He pointed out that the goal is to create a modern base for both cadets in military specialties and students studying in the field of national security.
In his address, Kalinov recalled that this 2026 marks the 145th anniversary since its founding and that the school’s graduates enjoy a very good reception in companies all over the world. He added that the school has over 50 contracts with shipping companies.
Regarding the training of the cadets, Kalinov said that one of the challenges for them will be the dynamics in the development of weapons and equipment, as well as in the concepts of its use. As a challenge, he also pointed to the increasingly imminent entry of autonomous ships, including in commercial shipping.
This year, the school is accepting 860 bachelor’s students, 100 of whom will be studying in a foreign language. Over 200 people have been accepted into master’s programs. The school also plans to introduce a new bachelor’s program related to aerospace engineering next year.
