Turnover in Retail trade, except trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles at constant prices increased by 0.3% in August 2026 compared with the previous month, according to preliminary and seasonally adjusted data released by the National Statistical Institute on Wednesday.
Compared with August 2025, retail trade turnover rose by 5.9%, according to calendar-adjusted data.
Monthly changes
In August, turnover in Retail sales of automotive fuels in specialised stores increased by 2.2% month-on-month, while Retail trade of food products, beverages and tobacco declined by 0.4%. Retail trade of non-food products (except fuel) remained at the previous month’s level.
Within non-food retail, turnover fell by 2.3% in Dispensing chemist; retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles, by 1.8% in Other retail sales in non-specialised stores, and by 1% in Retail sales of computers, peripheral units and software; telecommunications equipment.
Turnover increased by 2.3% in Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet and by 1.7% in Retail sales of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods.
Annual changes
Compared with August 2025, turnover increased in all major groups. Retail sales of automotive fuel in specialised stores rose by 8.3%, Retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco by 7.5%, and Retail sales of non-food products (except fuel) by 4.2%.
Within non-food retail, the strongest increase was recorded in Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet, up 28.1%. Turnover rose by 13.1% in Retail sales of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods, by 7.1% in Other retail sales in non-specialised stores, and by 4.6% in Retail sales of computers, peripheral units and software; telecommunications equipment.
A 4.3% decline was recorded in Retail sale of audio and video equipment; hardware, paints and glass; electrical household appliances.
