Bulgarian football club CSKA put in a very good performance but lost 2-1 to Monaco in their opening match in the Conference League group stage. The Monegasque side took a 2-0 lead before half-time through German youth international Paris Brunner and former Barcelona striker Ansu Fati. CSKA substitute Joel Zwarts scored a consolation goal with a header for the Bulgarian side in the 76th minute.
CSKA started without a single Bulgarian player in their starting line-up, with internationals Teodor Ivanov and Petko Panayotov left on the bench. Monaco, who are top of their domestic league, included several players who do not feature regularly in Ligue 1 in their starting line-up.
In a week’s time, CSKA will travel to Denmark to face Nordsjaelland in the second round of the Conference League.
