The 5th Balkan Theatre Festival will feature seven productions from five Balkan countries on the stage of the Nikola Vaptsarov Drama Theatre in Blagoevgrad, the theatre said Saturday. The festival’s anniversary edition will take place from November 1 to 7, with the programme featuring seven performances from Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia, and Serbia.
This year’s edition focuses on the individual and the boundaries between freedom and power, memory and oblivion, personal choice and societal pressure. The festival features directors from Bulgaria – Margarita Mladenova and Stayko Murdzhev – and other Balkan countries, including Slovenian director Jernej Lorenci and Romanian director Andrei Majeri.
Lorenci will present the play “Fight for Survival” by the Preseren Theatre in Kranj and the City Theatre in Ptuj. Mladenova will present “The Face of the Neighbour” based on Dostoevsky, while Murdzhev will present “Scenes from an Execution” by Howard Barker at the Ivan Radoev Drama and Puppet Theatre in Pleven. Majeri returns to Blagoevgrad with the production “B-List Goddesses” by Alexandra Felsegi.
The festival will open on November 1 with the performance “Carnival of Fire” by director Plamen Ivanov and the Fireter Theatre in front of the Blagoevgrad Theatre building. The festival will conclude with the performance “Dragonius” by the same theatre company.
For the first time, the parallel programme includes screenings of theatre plays. On November 4, “The Innocent” will be screened, based on the novel “The Testament of Mary” by Colm Toibin, and on November 5, “Phaedra,” directed by Livia Pandur. Both productions are by the Drama Department of the Slovenian National Theatre in Maribor. The screenings will take place in the Nikolay Kimchev Hall starting at 5:00 p.m.; admission is free, but advance reservations are required.
Part of this year’s parallel programme is once again the Directors’ Market – an initiative that gives young directors the opportunity to present their ideas and bring them to life on a professional stage. The directors’ readings will take place on November 3, with free admission.
The 5th Balkan Theatre Festival, organized with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture, continues the Balkan Theatre Festival’s mission to transform Blagoevgrad into a space where cultures, theatrical traditions, and contemporary theatrical explorations converge, the hosts said. After each performance in the main programme, audience members will have the opportunity to stay for a conversation and discussion with the creative teams.
