Balgarianovinite.com The Burgas Administrative Court suspended the preliminary enforcement of the coercive administrative measure ordering the suspension of production at the Kronospan plant in Veliko Tarnovo, North Central Bulgaria, according to a statement released by Kronospan on Saturday. On January 16, the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Veliko Tarnovo ordered the suspension of the particleboard production line at the Kronospan wood-processing plant following an unscheduled January 15 inspection prompted by numerous citizen complaints about strong odours and haze in residential areas.
The company’s press release reads: “In its reasoning, the court found that an immediate suspension would cause significant and irreparable damage to the company, including serious financial losses, the risk of staff reductions, and the inability to fulfil commitments to partners and institutions. The negative impact on the public interest and the economic environment in the region was also taken into account. The court also considered the fact that there were no reported exceedances of the emission limits set out in the company’s integrated permit.”
Despite the court ruling, the production line will be shut down on Sunday, the company said. Work will resume in a gradual and controlled manner, with the company taking all necessary safety measures. The process is technologically complex and will take several days, with priority given to employee safety.
Kronospan also said it will continue dialogue with institutions and the public to find a sustainable solution that takes into account both environmental protection and the socio-economic effects on the region.
