Balgarianovinite.com Artists from Bulgaria, Spain, Ukraine, Italy and Nepal will take part in this year’s 12th edition of the Orpheus in Spain Performing Arts Festival, which will be held on 15 March in Malaga, Spain, Petya Koleva, founder, music teacher and artistic director of La Cajita Musical Theatre – organisers of the festival together with the Unikaja Foundation – told BTA.
The festival programme includes two concerts – the competition concert “The Magic of Cinema in Song” and a gala evening with gospel performances, during which the winners of the competition will be announced.
Participants in three age groups – from 6 to 11 years, 12 to 15 years, and over 15 years – will compete with songs from films. The participants will perform iconic themes from films such as The Wizard of Oz, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Aladdin, Pretty Woman, as well as productions by Disney and films from the James Bond series.
At the festival’s gala evening, the Gospel Ladies sextet and the Gospel Boys quartet will take the stage.
“The boys perform southern gospel – an interesting blend of blues and country. The girls have incredible voices and perform classical gospel. During the concert, the audience will be able to hear versions of songs by major names in the genre such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Etta James, Patti LaBelle and Mahalia Jackson. Performances by the two groups will alternate during the concert, which will conclude with joint performances,” Koleva said.
She added that both concerts – the competition and the gala concert – are open to the public, and all tickets have already been sold out.
In the festival competition, Bulgaria will be represented by Atanas Panev from Plovdiv, a student of vocal teacher Teodora Cherneva. Panev studies at a language high school in Plovdiv, where he is learning Spanish. He is taking part in the festival for the second time.
The winners of the competition are selected by a professional jury and by the audience. The audience votes by selecting three participants in each age category, Petya Koleva explained.
“The idea of the Orpheus in Spain Festival, which we have been organising for the 12th time, is to bring together young performers from different countries so that they can build lasting contacts and friendships. Music is an international language and is understood by everyone,” Petya Koleva added.
The children’s and youth theatre La Cajita Musical in Malaga was established in 2008 as a project of the largest bank in the Andalusia region – Unikaja. Its founder and director is the Bulgarian opera singer Petya Koleva, who has been living in Spain since 2002.
Each year since the theatre was founded, 25 children of diverse backgrounds, including Bulgarian, aged 7 to 17, have taken part in artistic activities at La Cajita Musical. So far, more than 150 children and young people have passed through the group, many of whom have continued their education in the Musical Theatre class at the Theatre Academy of Malaga.
