Balgarianovinite.com Balkan Black Box was screened at the Romanian Diplomatic Institute in Bucharest on Thursday. The venue was packed for the film about Bulgarian architect and musician Nikola Gruev, aka Kottarashky, who was the star guest of the evening. Among the special guests was Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Romania Radko Vlaykov.
The event was organized by OrasulReel Foundation, the Tulcea Film Society, the Romanian Diplomatic Institute, the Embassy of Bulgaria in Romania and Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“It is very important to have activities like this that are not only diplomatic and political, but also cultural. Culture is one of the areas in which we work. Bulgaria and Romania have many common interests in culture, as well as shared traditions. Bulgaria has many talented actors and musicians,” Ambassador Vlaykov told the audience.
“I hope you enjoyed the film. It is an improvisation, just like the art I make. I am a self-taught musician and I look for different elements. I mix all kinds of ethnic music: Bulgarian folklore, sometimes Romanian and Roma music. That is only part of what I do,” Gruev-Kottarashky said.
Asked by BTA, he said he likes Romania very much and considers it an amazing country, describing Bucharest and Timisoara as great cities. “Romanian cities are better than Bulgarian ones. I say that as an architect,” he added. Kottarashky did not rule out a musical collaboration with Romanian hip-hop band Subcarpati.
“Working as a promoter, I have started inviting Romanian bands to Bulgaria. Subcarpati have already come three times,” Kottarashky said.
He added that he is a great admirer of Romanian folklore and of Subcarpati and Taraf de Haidouks among contemporary groups.
Kottarashky was accompanied at Thursday’s event by multi-instrumentalist Sando Sandov. On Friday, the two will perform on one of the stages of Balkanik Festival, one of Southeastern Europe’s largest festivals and the first dedicated entirely to Balkan music and values, held annually in Bucharest.
Nikola Gruev was born in 1979. He is a musician and composer who combines original recordings with electronic music, hip-hop, jazz and other genres. Kottarashky describes his style as “Balkan psychedelia”, while critics have placed him among performers of the “Balkan rhythm wave”.
Tzvetan Dragnev, the director and screenwriter of Balkan Black Box, graduated from the Film and Video Faculty of York University Toronto. He has worked as a director, editor and director of photography on short and feature-length documentaries in Bulgaria and Canada. His films Village People and Passengers have been shown at numerous international film festivals and have won awards. Delyan Georgiev is the film’s director of photography, while Galina Toneva and Kiril Kirilov are its producers.
The road movie follows one year in the life of Kottarashky as he travels and performs with his band. Everyone is searching for something. The protagonist’s reflections alternate with concert performances and encounters with figures including Japanese mathematics professor and philosopher Ted Katsuo and hermit bagpiper Vesko Minev.
