Democratic Bulgaria Deputy Floor Leader Bozhidar Bozhanov on Monday accused the government of violating the Election Code by using its official channels to engage in election campaigning. In a Facebook post, Bozhanov, who also co-chairs the Yes, Bulgaria, party, urged the Central Election Commission to rule on the matter immediately.
According to him, Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s government intends to keep the planned 2027 state budget under wraps until after the presidential election runoff on November 1 in an attempt “to save” incumbent President and presidential candidate Iliana Iotova, who is officially supported by the Prime Minister’s party, Progressive Bulgaria. “But the law says that the budget must be submitted by October 31. They are probably hiding it because it will contain more disappointing things that will not motivate people to vote,” Bozhanov commented.
He said that Iotova, who is one of the two presidential candidates going to the runoff, apparently seeks to become, figuratively, “the Prime Minister’s vice president”. But Radev “will fail, because confidence in the government is plummeting, just like confidence in Iotova,” Bozhanov argued.
He went on to comment on other remarks made by the Prime Minister during the Sofia Economic Forum earlier on Monday. Radev told journalists on the sidelines of the forum: “The choice [in the presidential election] is clear and so is what is at stake: on Sunday, voters will choose between peace and war, between democracy and the corruption model of the ‘assemblage’ [a derogatory term referring to the formation of governments by politically incompatible entities], and between the calm of truth and the hysteria of trolls.”
According to Bozhanov, Radev’s contentions were influenced by Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov. Bozhanov commented in his Facebook post: “No matter how much they fantasize about political coalitions and trolls and create false dilemmas between ‘war and peace’, scaremongering will not bring them success.”
The lawmaker said that everyone wants peace. He said that the other contestant in the upcoming election runoff, Andrey Gurov, and his running mate Georgi Kandev have guaranteed that the corrupt political model cannot be re-established through bought and controlled votes. Bozhanov added that numerous troll farms working for Iotova and Progressive Bulgaria have been identified in recent weeks.
Bozhanov said: “The choice is between a clear foreign policy and bowing down, between the future and the past, and between a balance of powers on the one hand and the concentration of power on the other. And this is a government that can barely get anything done even with a full parliamentary majority and blames the opposition.”
