British historian, television presenter and writer Prof. Bettany Hughes presented her book The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and her film Bulgaria: Land of Roses in Sofia on Monday.
Presenting her book, Prof. Hughes said that they would not be able to make new films without the support, cooperation, and love the Bulgarian audience has shown them. “I thought to myself – we have made films about the Roman heritage in Bulgaria, but we also need to make a film about Bulgaria itself,” Prof. Hughes added. In her words, wonders are important because when people marvel at them, it draws them in; when people engaged, they begin to understand, and when they understand, they come to love.
Prof. Hughes’ fifth film will be dedicated to the remains of Tsar Samuel, said Minister of Tourism Ilin Dimitrov, who participated in the presentation.
TV show host Boyko Vassilev hosted the event. He read a congratulatory message from Minister of Culture Evtim Miloshev. “Thank you for the opportunity, through your work, to present our country in all its historical and cultural diversity,” the message read.
The publisher of Prof. Hughes’ book, Iliyan Andonov of the Knigomania publishing house, noted that over two billion readers and viewers reached by her projects enjoy her films, books, and podcasts. “If Indiana Jones made archaeology exciting for the movies, then Prof. Bettany Hughes has made real history exciting for the whole world,” said Andonov. According to him, what sets Prof. Hughes’s books apart from other history books is that she manages to make the reader feel that ancient people were just like us.
Miroslav Ivanov, Editor-in-Chief and owner of Travel News said he was very happy about what Prof. Hughes has done for Bulgaria’s Rose Valley. “The films about Bulgaria have been viewed by over 50 million people, according to ChatGPT,” he noted.
Prof. Hughes has written and presented more than 50 television and radio documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, Netflix, Discovery, PBS, The History Channel, National Geographic, BBC World and ITV. Her programmes have been watched by more than 250 million people worldwide.
Her series Treasures of the World is broadcast in 120 countries around the world. The documentary Treasures of Bulgaria is part of this series. The first episode was filmed in the summer of 2023 and features the Kazanlak Tomb, Buzludzha, the Basilica in Plovdiv, Heraclea Sintica, the Rila Monastery, the Rila Lakes, the Archaeological Museum in Varna, where the world’s oldest worked gold is on display, Lake Varna, the fire-dancing rituals in the village of Kosti, and the rituals of the residents of the village of Ribnovo.
