Balgarianovinite.com The June issue of LIK, dedicated to Ghena Dimitrova, is a provocation to preserve memory. With these words, Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev presented the latest issue of the BTA’s magazine for art and culture, on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the birth of the world-renowned Bulgarian soprano.
Ghena Dimitrova was born on June 5, 1941.
The event took place at the Richard Wagner Club of the Sofia Opera and Ballet and was opened by Plamena Girginova, a doctoral student at the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music, who performed Elvira’s aria from Vincenzo Bellini’s I Puritani.
“We are dedicating the June issue of LIK magazine to one of Bulgaria’s greatest opera singers – Ghena Dimitrova. The occasion is the 85th anniversary of her birth, but the real reason is the need to preserve the memory of the people who have left their mark far beyond the borders of Bulgaria,” Valchev said. He noted that the issue is not simply a biographical account but an attempt to show what it means for a person to become part of cultural memory.
“This issue is a provocation to preserve memory. Not only the memory of Ghena Dimitrova, but of all the people who have made Bulgaria recognizable around the world through their talent,” the BTA Director General said. According to him, memory does not preserve itself but requires constant effort and dialogue between generations.
Valchev recalled that in recent years LIK magazine has consistently been building a kind of encyclopedia of Bulgarian culture, with each issue dedicated to emblematic personalities, institutions and phenomena. “The mission of LIK is to connect generations. To tell the stories of personalities whom young people may not know well enough, but without whom Bulgarian culture would not be what it is today,” Valchev said.
According to him, the decision to present the issue at the Sofia Opera and Ballet was no coincidence. “There is no more appropriate place to speak about Ghena Dimitrova than the Sofia Opera – the stage where her great artistic journey began and which remains an inseparable part of her legacy,” Valchev said.
He recalled that Ghena Dimitrova was among the few Bulgarian performers who became a global symbol of opera, having sung on the world’s most prestigious stages and worked with the greatest conductors and directors of her time.
“When we speak about Ghena Dimitrova, we are not speaking only about a great singer. We are speaking about Bulgaria, which, through her voice, was present on the world’s greatest stages,” the BTA Director General said.
Valchev reiterated a proposal, initially made by Sofia Opera and Ballet Director Plamen Kartaloff, to have a museum of Bulgarian opera glory established in the Sofia Opera and Ballet building.
In conclusion, Valchev thanked all the authors who contributed to the preparation of the issue, as well as the hosts from the Sofia Opera and Ballet. “I am convinced that everyone here today, as well as those watching us in Sofia, across the country and outside Bulgaria, share the understanding that memory must be preserved. That is precisely why this issue of LIK is so important,” Valchev said.
