Bulgarian athletes have won three of the four awards presented by Balkan Athletics at its annual gala. Bozhidar Saraboyukov was named Athlete of the Year, while Viktoria Angelova and Hristo Iliev received the Rising Stars awards. Bulgarian Athletics Federation President Georgi Pavlov collected the three awards in Tirana on behalf of the athletes.
This success is tremendous recognition for Bulgaria, its athletes, coaches, clubs and everyone who loves athletics in the country, Pavlov said in Tirana. “What happened today is historic. We have never won three out of the four awards before. This is a testament to everything we are doing at the federation and to my work as its president. This is for all of Bulgaria,” he added.
“To be chosen ahead of Tentoglou is truly remarkable. Saraboyukov not only beat Tentoglou but also Karalis, who has achieved a great deal this year. This is full recognition of Bozhidar and everything he has accomplished this season. He has had a phenomenal year. Bozhidar’s success in this poll is impressive. He has beaten two legends of world athletics, Miltiadis Tentoglou and Emmanouil Karalis. This is tremendous recognition of what Bozhidar has achieved in this phenomenal season and a well-deserved award. I congratulate Bozhidar, his coach, his parents, the municipality and everyone in Harmanli,” Pavlov said.
He also praised the performances of young athletes Viktoria Angelova and Hristo Iliev. “Viktoria and Hristo have brought their season to a fitting close with these Balkan Rising Stars awards. This recognition extends beyond Bulgaria to the entire Balkans, which comprises 22 countries. Their hard work has been duly recognized by everyone who voted for them. Both Viktoria and Hristo have had an exceptional season. They are remarkable young people, and they have much more to offer,” he said.
“The contribution of coaches and clubs is fundamental. None of this would be possible without them, the athletes’ parents and everyone supporting them,” Pavlov added.
The moment that stood out most for Pavlov this season was the awards ceremony held in Sofia on September 14, when the federation organized a celebration honouring the 2026 award winners.
“At that event, we honoured all these athletes for their outstanding season, as well as their coaches. What made me particularly happy was that representatives of all the institutions came to pay tribute to athletics. The sport is reclaiming the place it deserves as the queen of sports,” he said. “I am equally happy here in Tirana because, in the presence of all 22 national federation presidents, the vice-president of World Athletics and the president of European Athletics, Bulgaria has secured the standing it deserves — a position at the top of the awards tally, something we have not achieved for many years,” Palvov noted.
