The Bulgarian Woman of the Year award will be presented at a ceremony on Thursday, the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad (EABA) said.
The ceremony for the 2025 Bulgarian Woman of the Year – St Zlata of Meglen award will be held in the Maxima Hall of the University of National and World Economy (UNWE).
The programme will feature an exhibition presenting nominees from previous years and tracing the award’s history. The ceremony will bring together representatives of Bulgarian State institutions, the diplomatic corps, organizations of Bulgarians abroad, cultural and educational figures, and women nominated over the years.
Established in 2009, the award is presented annually by EABA to honour women who preserve Bulgarian identity worldwide.
The agency also linked the award’s origins to recognition of Spaska Mitrova, who faced persecution and imprisonment in North Macedonia because of her Bulgarian identity, and Konstantina Kouneva (also known as Kostadinka Kuneva), who was attacked with acid in Greece because of her trade union activities.
The prize comprises a bronze statuette of St Zlata of Meglen and an icon reproducing a fresco of the saint in Sofia’s Church of Sts Peter and Paul.
The winner of the Audience’s Favourite Bulgarian Woman award, introduced in 2024, is selected through online voting.
