The Council of Ministers has adopted a decree to organize an international conference at ministerial level, dedicated to the development and strategic importance of Pan-European Corridor VIII, which will be held on October 7 and 8 in Sofia. The forum will be attended by ministers, high-ranking representatives of various European and regional organizations and experts from interested countries and institutions, the Government Information Service said Tuesday. The purpose of the conference is to discuss the progress in the construction of the Corridor and the possibilities for accelerating work on its individual areas.
Corridor VIII is of strategic importance for Bulgaria and the development of connectivity in Southeastern Europe. As a route connecting the Black Sea with the Adriatic Sea, it has the potential to improve infrastructure along the East-West axis and contribute to economic development, energy connectivity, sustainability and security in the region, the press release reads.
The conference will provide a platform for political and expert dialogue, closer coordination between stakeholders and identification of concrete next steps for the development of Corridor VIII. Holding it in Sofia will contribute to the establishment of Bulgaria as an active factor in the development of regional connectivity and will give additional political impetus to the efforts for its implementation, the Government Information Service said.
In September, Director of Rail Infrastructure in North Macedonia Sinisa Ivanovski reported that around 40% of the work on the Beljakovce-Kriva Palanka section of Railway Corridor VIII in North Macedonia has been completed.
