Bulgaria will be represented with a national stand and a programme of literary events at the Frankfurt Book Fair, which will take place from October 7 to 11, the Bulgarian Book Association said on Thursday. The stand and programme are organized by the Association with financial support from the Bulgarian Culture Ministry.
For the first time in the history of Bulgaria’s participation in the fair, the Bulgarian Book Association, together with the Hellenic Foundation for Book and Culture (HFBC), will organize an event on one of the fair’s official stages, the Dialogue Stage. It will feature International Booker Prize nominee Rene Karabash and Greek writer and translator Christos Asteriou.
The Bulgarian programme will present representatives of the country’s publishing sector to an international audience, focusing on the development of reading communities, literary exchange and the international success of Bulgarian authors. Events will take place both at the national stand and elsewhere at the fair.
The Bulgarian national stand will officially open at 5 p.m. on October 7 in Hall 3.1, Stand B19. This will be the Bulgarian Book Association’s 19th participation with a stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
The stand is intended as a venue for professional and cultural exchange, presenting Bulgarian literature to publishers, literary agents, authors, translators, media, cultural institutions and readers, as well as facilitating international partnerships.
The programme begins on October 7 with a presentation titled Building a Reading Infrastructure: Partnerships and Good Practices, featuring Valentina Stoeva, founder of the Children’s Books Foundation and the Reading Foundation and chair of EURead.
It will be followed by a presentation of Volia, a special programme for publishers from Ukraine and neighbouring countries, with Bulgarian Book Association Management Board member Yordanka Furnadzhieva and Sofia Literary Agency Director Gergana Pancheva.
On October 9, National Book Centre Director Svetlozar Zhelev will take part in a presentation titled The Bulgarian Phenomenon – a single event or a collective effort? How to make it to the Booker International Awards with two authors for only 3 years.
Later that morning, Todora Radeva, founder of Read Sofia, and Yulia Rafailovich, Executive Director of Next Page and the Literature and Translation House, will present about building literary communities through events, residencies and creative workshops.
The Bulgarian programme also includes three events outside the national stand.
On October 9, Bulgarian writer Elena Alexieva and Romanian writer Bogdan-Alexandru Stanescu will take part in Stories Across the Danube: Memory, Place and Translation at Romania’s national stand. Dana Grigorcea will moderate the discussion, jointly organized by the Bulgarian Book Association and Romania’s Culture Ministry.
Later that day, Alexieva will meet readers at the Bulgarian Consulate General in Frankfurt for a discussion moderated by Svetlozar Zhelev.
The programme will conclude on October 11 on the Dialogue Stage with Transforming Research into Fiction: Keeping the Research Process at the Center of a Narrative or Shaping Emotions?, featuring Rene Karabash and Christos Asteriou. The event is jointly organized by the Bulgarian Book Association and the Hellenic Foundation for Book and Culture.
