Bulgaria is showcasing its contemporary literature and publishing sector at the 78th Frankfurt Book Fair, which kicked off in Frankfurt am Main on October 7. The country is taking part for the 19th time with a national stand organized by the Bulgarian Book Association (BBA) with financial support from the Culture Ministry, the BBA team said.
Yordanka Furnadzhieva of the Bulgarian Book Association and Diana Popova, Consul General of Bulgaria in Frankfurt am Main, officially opened the stand. Bulgarian publishers, authors, literary agents and translators, representatives of international partner organizations, and professionals from the publishing sector attended the opening.
The national stand, located in Hall 3.1, B19, features a selection of contemporary titles from Bulgarian publishers, including fiction and nonfiction, children’s books, award-winning and nominated titles, and books in translation.
The first day’s programme included a discussion on promoting a sustainable reading culture, where Valentina Stoeva of the Reading Foundation highlighted the role of partnerships, shared experience and good practices. This was followed by an international professional meeting under VOLIA – Special Programme for Publishers from Ukraine and Neighbouring Countries, where Gergana Pancheva and Yordanka Furnadzhieva presented Bulgaria’s publishing sector and opportunities for cooperation with Bulgarian publishers and literary professionals.
The Bulgarian stand hosted around 20 representatives of the international book sector, including 15 publishers from Ukraine and neighbouring countries, as well as representatives of the Frankfurt Book Fair and the International Book Arsenal Festival. The meeting provided an opportunity for Bulgarian and foreign professionals to exchange information about book markets and explore future contacts and partnerships.
The programme continues over the coming days with meetings, discussions and professional events involving Bulgarian authors and representatives of the book sector. Some of Bulgaria’s activities are also taking place outside the national stand.
On October 9, writer Elena Alexieva will join Romanian writer Bogdan-Alexandru Stănescu for the discussion “Stories Across the Danube: Memory, Place and Translation“ at the Romanian national stand. The discussion will be moderated by writer Dana Grigorcea. Later in the day, Alexieva will meet with the Bulgarian community in Frankfurt at the Consulate General of Bulgaria. The conversation with the writer will be moderated by Svetlozar Zhelev.
On October 11, writer Rene Karabash will talk with Greek writer and translator Christos Asteriou as part of the Bulgarian-Greek discussion “Transforming Research into Fiction.”
Alongside its cultural programme, the Bulgarian national stand serves as a venue for professional meetings with publishers, literary agents and international organizations. The aim is not only to showcase contemporary Bulgarian publishing but also to establish new contacts, create opportunities for translation and rights exchanges, and build long-term international partnerships.
The Bulgarian Book Association’s participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair continues until October 11, 2026.
