Addressing the opening of the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Budapest on Monday, Bulgaria’s Minister of Education and Science Georgi Valchev voiced hope that, with the help of the media, the invaluable experience of the Bulgarian community in Hungary would be shared wherever the Bulgarian language is spoken and memories of Bulgaria, the ancestral homeland, remain alive. This experience should serve as an example of how peaceful coexistence can resolve problems that might otherwise appear difficult to overcome, he said.
At the beginning of his address, Valchev turned to representatives of the Bulgarian community in Hungary.
“Today, we truly witnessed something that I hope will be brought to the attention of people around the world with the help of the media. We saw the esteem and respect enjoyed by the Bulgarian community in Hungary,” he said. In his remarks, the Minister raised the question of the media’s role in a changing information environment. “There are many challenges in today’s information landscape, but there are also many fears. What must the media do to preserve their leading role?” Valchev asked.
He voiced hope that the forthcoming discussions at the World Meeting would help find answers to these questions. “I hope that, as always, life will gradually bring order to the chaos we feel we are beginning to enter. I believe the discussions will ultimately prove that natural intelligence will prevail. There is no way we can work against technology; of course, we must use it,” the Minister said.
“However, human intelligence has always been, and remains, at the heart of human development,” he stressed.
Valchev also addressed the participants on the responsibility of education and the media towards young people.
“As Bulgaria’s Minister of Education and Science, I hope that, with your help, we can better equip younger generations to find their way in this complex world and help shape the young leaders we all need, if we work honestly and sincerely, with faith, determination and humility,” he said.
The Monday programme of the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media began at 9 a.m. with a meeting between participants and Marton Hajdu, Chair of the Hungarian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
The participants were subsequently given the opportunity to tour the parliament building, including its ceremonial staircase, and view the Holy Crown of Hungary. The delegation was welcomed by Zoltan Tar, Hungary’s Minister of Public Relations and Culture, who received a plaque bearing the image of St John of Rila as a gift.
The programme continued with the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day in the foyer of the Barankovics building, an office building for members of the Hungarian Parliament.
BTA is organizing the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Hungary with the support of DSK Bank, OTP Group, Aurubis Bulgaria, A1, SOF Connect – the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, Geotechmin, Postbank and the 13 Centuries Bulgaria National Endowment Fund. The forum is expected to bring together participants from 25 countries, both in person and online.
