The Management Board of the State Fund for Agriculture approved a budget of up to EUR 1.8 million under the de minimis aid scheme to compensate farmers raising small ruminants whose holdings are located in areas subject to movement and other restrictions due to outbreaks of sheep and goat pox, the Fund said on Thursday.
Between June and September 2026, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency identified multiple primary outbreaks of sheep and goat pox in Bulgaria, in the regions of Plovdiv, Haskovo, Stara Zagora, Kardzhali, Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Yambol and Sofia.
In response to the worsening animal health situation, the Agency ordered the humane culling of animals at the primary outbreak sites and introduced restrictive measures, including a 5 km protection zone and a 15 km surveillance zone around the affected locations.
The state aid will be provided in 2026 to livestock farmers whose registered holdings are located within settlements where the Agency imposed restrictive measures.
The de minimis aid will cover part of the farmers’ costs for feeding their small ruminants kept within the areas subject to restrictions. Eligible farmers will receive up to EUR 8 per live small ruminant.
The maximum amount of de minimis aid that a single farmer may receive over a three-year period is EUR 50,000.
The State Fund for Agriculture and the Agriculture and Food Ministry are to prepare guidelines for implementing the aid scheme, which will then be approved by the Agriculture and Food Minister.
In 2025, the State Fund for Agriculture authorized nearly BGN 2.245 million in compensation under the de minimis state aid scheme for farmers raising herds in areas subject to restrictions imposed due to outbreaks of sheep and goat pox. The financial assistance was distributed among 732 farmers, the Fund said.
