The Bulgarian Navy has destroyed on the spot or retrieved from the water various parts of more than 100 drones this year alone, said the Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov. At the Varna Naval Base on Tuesday, he welcomed the ships returning home after participating in the latest mission of the international Mine Countermeasures Black Sea Task Group (MCM Black Sea), comprising Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkiye.
He specified that, to date, the fleet has destroyed six floating mines in Bulgarian waters. Regarding the drone parts that were found, he noted that some of them posed a danger and were destroyed. According to him, 35 of those found so far fell into this category. In other cases, the parts were from unmanned aerial vehicles without warheads, but they still posed a danger to shipping, Mihaylov said. These were also removed from the sea.
“We are continuing our efforts both in a coalition format with our allies from neighbouring countries and independently,” the Rear Admiral underscored. He noted that two patrol ships are currently operating in Bulgarian maritime waters, tasked with monitoring shipping traffic and searching for floating mines or drone debris that must be destroyed.
In his words, the Navy is partnering with all branches of the Bulgarian Armed Forces, with the goal of strengthening surveillance and control of traffic in the Black Sea.
He specified that aircraft are also participating in the operation. A US Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft is currently based at Varna Airport and is also carrying out surveillance missions, he added. “This is already support from our allies,” said the Rear Admiral, adding that the aircraft will continue to carry out missions.
In addition, there is constant communication with neighbouring countries, with NATO’s Allied Maritime Command, and with the naval commands of the United States and France, Mihaylov added.
He also noted that the Bulgarian Navy is using drones from the Army and the Joint Special Operations Command to enhance surveillance in maritime areas.
