Bulgaria’s postal services market is worth EUR 500 million, with 87 operators providing services, the Ministry of Transport and Communications press centre said on Friday on the occasion of World Post Day, observed on October 9. This year’s theme is “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities.”
Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev congratulated employees in the sector on the occasion. He stressed that postal services today encompass not only letters and postage stamps, but also courier deliveries, e-commerce and parcel tracking.
“This is changing the way we work. It is changing the sector itself,” the Minister was quoted as saying in the statement.
The Ministry noted that, for Bulgarian Posts, this means finding the right balance between modernization and responsibility towards the people and communities that rely on the postal network. Private operators and courier companies need to continue investing in technology, organization and working conditions, while the State must ensure that these changes lead to better services, an improved working environment and access to postal services throughout the country.
“Behind these figures, there is more than just a market and statistics. There are people,” Peev stressed. He highlighted the work of counter staff, sorting centre employees, drivers, couriers and dispatchers, whose efforts ensure that shipments reach their recipients.
According to the Minister, World Post Day is an occasion not only to discuss the development of the sector, but also to thank postal workers.
Earlier this month, Minister Peev said during question time at a meeting of the relevant parliamentary committee that an audit of Bulgarian Posts had identified weaknesses in its management. These included an apparent lack of substantive activity beyond spending the state subsidy, the use of external services, consultancy contracts with unclear purposes, and payments for services that should be performed in-house by the postal service, including legal services and consultancy on public procurement.
