A Bulgarian copper-related project has been selected for support under the European Commission’s programme to secure supplies of critical raw materials, the Commission announced. The support is intended for Aurubis Bulgaria, which operates a copper ore processing plant near the western town of Pirdop.
The Commission will support 46 new projects across the EU, designated as strategic for securing raw material supplies and reducing dependence on external suppliers such as China. The selected projects will benefit from faster permitting, additional financing opportunities and broader support, the Commission said.
By 2030, the EU aims to extract at least 10% of its annual consumption of strategic raw materials, process at least 40% and recycle at least 25%. The EU has selected a total of 93 such projects to date, which require more than EUR 23 billion in funding.
The Commission clarified that the selected projects will not receive direct EU funding, but the additional opportunities provided are expected to help accelerate their development. Companies from 15 other EU Member States are also among the recipients of support under the newly announced projects.
