Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova plans to contact North Macedonia’s government and President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova on Monday to raise the issue of necessary medical treatment for Iva Mihailova, a Bulgarian in North Macedonia who is charged with a serious traffic offence and was among those injured in the relevant road accident in October 2025. Iotova broke the news to journalists in the Black Sea city of Varna on Sunday.
On August 7, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that specialized medical care is necessary to prevent the real risk of permanent injuries with irreversible consequences for Mihailova’s right to a dignified life. Bulgaria is one of few countries where adequate care is available for the spinal injuries of Mihailova, who also holds Bulgarian citizenship. On August 4, the Bulgarian National Assembly Committee on Policies for Bulgarians Abroad heard testimony from Mihailova’s mother, Hristina Mihailova.
In her remarks in Varna on Sunday, President Iotova recalled that two months ago, when Bulgaria hosted the 30th anniversary edition of the South-East European Cooperation Process, she held talks with President Siljanovska and North Macedonia’s foreign minister. “At the time, they gave me many arguments as to why they could not ensure Mihailova’s presence in Bulgaria for treatment, citing their independent judicial system, which would not issue such permission,” Iotova said.
The President added that she had proposed that North Macedonia allow a Bulgarian medical team to travel to the country and examine Mihailova on the spot. According to Iotova, the aim is also to secure the assistance of hospitals in North Macedonia, preferably in the capital, so that the doctors can determine where the girl would be best treated.
“I still have no answer, although North Macedonia’s foreign minister promised to send me one,” Iotova said. She stressed that she will not give up and will renew her request to the North Macedonian government and president on Monday.
Iotova said there is no argument that could justify such behaviour — allowing a young girl to become disabled simply because Bulgaria’s partners in North Macedonia are “enslaved by ideological dogmas that are absolutely absurd in the 21st century”.
“Nothing is more important than human life and health,” the president concluded.
