CBS News allegedly ruined the rep of a 15-year-old Maryland boy by wrongly showing footage of him in police custody during a report on alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the teen’s family claimed in a $20 million lawsuit.
The teen had been taken into custody by police as he rode his electric bike past the iconic reflecting pool on June 20 because of his ebike, and was released without charges, the family said in the litigation filed Wednesday in Washington D.C. Federal Court.
The next day, CBS reported that five people were arrested for vandalizing the Reflecting Pool, and used footage of the teen, identified in court papers by the initials JV, in handcuffs.
The television report showed the teen’s hoodie, which included a “distinctive” logo, and a social media post on the story showed his face, the family contended in court papers.
CBS ultimately retracted its report on Aug. 16, saying, “We never should have published this story.”
Charges against all those arrested in connection with alleged vandalism at the site, including former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, were later dropped.
But the damage was already done, he family insisted in court papers.
“This was not an error that CBS lacked the means to avoid,” according to the lawsuit, which claimed the report has gotten 1.8 million views:
The consequences for JV have been profound. Before CBS’s publication, JV was an excellent student and high-school ice hockey player with a sterling reputation among his school, teammates, friends, family, and community. After CBS falsely associated him with a notorious federal vandalism case, numerous friends, teammates, and others contacted him about the report, and friends distanced themselves from him. JV has suffered embarrassment, humiliation, anxiety, loss of sleep, emotional distress, and continuing fear that CBS’s false accusation will follow him through high school and affect his college admissions, athletic opportunities, employment, and future career.
The permanence and seriousness of that harm are magnified by JV’s age. A 15-year-old child should not enter adulthood burdened by an internet record created by one of the country’s largest news organizations falsely portraying him as having been arrested for committing a CBS published the report across Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, where it accumulated at least 1.8 million views, more than 35,000 likes, thousands of comments, and more than a thousand documented shares.
CBS declined comment on the pending litigation.
The boy his mom, Sangduen Teekawong, said the situation has been made worse by President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that people are vandalizing the Reflecting Pool, which had undergone a botched, rushed renovation ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Trump has insisted on labeling the alleged vandals as “deranged,” “animals” and “scum,” the family noted.
“JV is not an animal, deranged vandal or scum,” they said in the litigation. “He is a normal 15-year-old high school student who was dragged into this horrific spotlight by the reckless reporting of CBS.”
The contractor who did the renovation has taken responsibility for the damage at the reflecting pool.
