Colin Kaepernick claimed an unlikely middleman tried to broker a White House meeting between him and President Donald Trump: veteran CNN contributor Van Jones.
The ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback dished during a Wednesday interview on the MediasTouch podcast that Jones — who served as a special advisor to President Barack Obama before heading to cable news — tried to set up the summit during Trump’s first term. Kaepernick said he dismissed it ASAP.
“What was relayed to me was the outreach came from Van Jones for this,” Kaepernick explained. “And you know, they wanted to have us come in — I don’t know the details around it because, candidly, as soon it came up as ‘Hey, here is the opportunity,’ it was immediately rejected.”
He reminded listeners this came after Trump was “trying to target me and my employment.” Kaepernick was obviously referring to when Trump condemned the QB for kneeling for the national anthem in 2016, with Trump saying it was a “terrible thing.” Then-candidate Trump also suggested Kaepernick “should find a country that works better for him,” but he said that “won’t happen.”
And perhaps the most memorable example came a year later, when Trump vented at a rally, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b*tch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’”
Kaepernick told MeidasTouch the proposed meeting was just a cheap way for Trump to act like he cared about Black people.
“[It was] Him trying to garner support and put up a facade that he’s working for Black people or trying to be in the benefit of Black people — history shows otherwise,” Kaepernick said.
He then lumped Jones in with a powerful “oligarchy” which he said included Trump and several other celebrities:
We see the connection the connection between Trump, the connection to Van Jones, Jay-Z, Robert Kraft, with the Reform Alliance. And ultimately what we see is on the other side of that, you know, pardons being handed out, and we’re seeing those pay-for-play right now.
And I think this alignment of interests that we’re seeing, and them trying to reach out to give them the marketing and the facade and the perception, like, “Hey, all of the negative actions that we are taking that are counter to your interests, let us put on a good show and try to give you the visibility and perception, like we’re trying to do good for you.” Which actually is just not the case, and that has been proven time and time again.
Kaepernick’s remarks come as he has been making the media rounds this week.
In an interview with the Higher Learning podcast on Wednesday, he lamented he still not “at peace” with his protest because the police have not been defunded nationwide.
