Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick lamented he is still not “at peace” with his protest, a decade after he started kneeling for the National Anthem, because police departments have not been defunded from coast-to-coast.
Kaepernick reflected on his protest during a Wednesday interview on The Ringer’s Higher Learning podcast.
The ex-San Francisco 49ers QB grabbed national headlines in 2016 when he started protesting police brutality and what he claimed was the nation’s racist oppression of Black citizens — two issues which he said made him disgusted by the American flag. Kaepernick told the podcast he feels good about what he did in hindsight, but not the result.
“Are you at peace?” co-host Van Lathan asked.
“Hmmm, I think different variations of that. At peace with the decisions I made and the approach that I’ve taken? Yes,” Kaepernick said. “At peace with the outcomes? No.”
Kaepernick continued, “I mean, ultimately I want to be back on the field. Ultimately, I want to see an end to police brutality and mass incarceration. There is still a ton of work to be doin’ there. Also, since the protest, police budgets have continued to bloat, police killings have continued to rise.”
His answer comes 10 years after Kaepernick started taking a knee during the National Anthem before games kicked off.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said at the time. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Kaepernick was also photographed sporting socks which depicted cops as pigs during the same season.
“There’s a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality,” he said in 2016. “There’s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable. People are being given paid leave for killing people. That’s not right. That’s not right by anyone’s standards.”
Kaepernick’s career came to a swift close after his protest. He played his last game on January 1, 2017 at the age of 29, and he later accused the league of “blackballing” him — a claim which the NFL denied.
The former star has since went on to make a career of his social activism, which included a six-part series for Netflix where he compared the NFL draft combine to slave auctions.
“What they don’t want you to understand is what’s being established is a power dynamic,” Kaepernick said in the show. “Before they put you on the field, teams poke, prod, and examine you searching for any defect that might affect your performance. No boundary respected. No dignity left intact.”
On Wednesday, Kaepernick said the NFL’s reaction to him has been similar to a lot of “MAGA folks” who have told him to leave the country if he hates it so much.
“[People say,] ‘If you’re going to critique the NFL, if you’re going to say it’s racist, if you’re going to say you don’t trust the owners, well, why don’t you leave?’ I don’t think we should be in a space where we run from those fights,” Kaepernick said. “Otherwise, we just allow it to continue to exist as it is.”
