Balgarianovinite.com The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has carried out a total of 14,535 inspections during the one-year period of mandatory dual price display from August 8, 2025 to August 8, 2026, the commission reported on Monday.
The inspections were carried out throughout the country in physical commercial and tourist sites, e-shops and other places for online trading. The control covered the availability and correct presentation of prices in lev and euro, currency conversion at the official exchange rate, correct rounding, the uniform and clear display of both prices and the correspondence between the announced and charged price. The economic justification of established price increases was also checked.
1,121 acts of establishing administrative violations were drawn up for the violations found, 474 agreements were concluded and 272 penal decrees were issued. The sanctions imposed totaled EUR 1.31 million.
The most common violations were related to missing or incorrect dual price indication, incorrect currency conversion and rounding, different font size, type or color, lack of clear indication of the currency, as well as economically unjustified price increases for individual goods and services.
From August 9, 2026, mandatory dual pricing is abolished, and sales prices must be indicated in euro. Traders may, at their discretion, continue to display the equivalent in levs, but only for information purposes. In this case, it must be unambiguously clear that the price in euros is the only selling and payable price.
The CPC stressed that the abolition of dual pricing does not mean the cessation of price control. From August 9, 2026, to August 9, 2027, the prohibition on economically unjustified price increases under the Consumer Protection Act continues to apply.
If a price increase is established, the trader must prove a direct and proportionate link between the increase and specific objective factors. These may include higher delivery or production costs, labour, energy, fuel or raw material costs, changes in taxes and fees, exchange rates or other external economic conditions. For an economically unjustified price increase by sole traders and legal entities, a property penalty of up to EUR 100,000 is provided. If the violation affects more than one good, service or commercial facility, a separate penalty is imposed for each violation.
The content of the public price portal is also changing. Along with individual retail sales prices, it will publish data on wholesale prices and the indicative fair value of certain goods.
The obligation to publish and provide price information on a daily basis applies to traders with a turnover of over EUR 25 million for the previous financial year. Traders below this threshold may provide information voluntarily.
