Corridor VIII is much more than a transport link, it is a strategic European connection linking the Adriatic and Black Seas and strengthening relations between the Western Balkans and the European Union, said Timco Mucunski, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of North Macedonia, at an International Ministerial Conference on Corridor VIII in Sofia.
According to Mucunski, the corridor connects markets, economies and people, while also playing an important role in the security and resilience of the region. He noted that the geopolitical environment has changed and that Europe needs reliable, diversified and resilient transport routes.
“Corridor VIII is not just about roads and railways. It is about resilience, security and Europe’s strategic connectivity,” the minister said.
For the Republic of North Macedonia, Corridor VIII is a clear national strategic priority, Mucunski said. According to him, the country’s geographic position between East and West should be turned into an advantage through better connectivity, economic cooperation and greater regional security.
Mucunski noted that the agreement on the preparation, construction and operation of the cross-border railway tunnel between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia entered into force in March this year. He described the agreement as a success and said that the latest meetings of the joint commission between the two countries had also been positive.
“Now is the opportunity to turn this political commitment into concrete results on the ground,” Mucunski said. He noted that the Republic of North Macedonia would continue to work closely with Bulgaria, Albania, the European Union and other partners on developing the necessary infrastructure.
According to him, the ambitions for Corridor VIII should be broader, with the corridor having the potential to become a platform for energy connectivity, digital infrastructure, trade, investment, logistics and security.
Mucunski stressed that no country can build the corridor on its own. “Its success requires commitment from all of us. Every part of the corridor is important, and every partner must fulfill its part,” he said.
The minister announced that the Republic of North Macedonia will host the next ministerial meeting on Corridor VIII in Skopje. He said the country would continue its work with an even stronger focus on implementation and achieving concrete results.
Mucunski identified the ultimate goal as transforming connectivity into cooperation and prosperity, as well as achieving integrated security and stability for the region and Europe.
