A California company staged a cage match between a $100,000 humanoid robot and an influencer in an event that caught the attention of state regulators — and would have made John Connor absolutely cringe.

The Sept. 18 bout between Frankie LaPenna and the $100,000 robot that looks eerily similar to the killing machines in The Terminator movies was staged by REK, or Robot Entertainment Kombat, which bills itself as a “humanoid robot fighting league.”
The literal cage match prompted the California State Athletic Commission to warn the San Francisco tech startup it had run afoul of state regulations by failing to secure the group’s approval beforehand, according to The New York Times.

Video of the cage fight begins with the 6-foot-tall, 200-pound silver device with glowing red eyes emerging from behind a curtain as a crowd cheers, with an announcer introducing it as: “The Terminator!”
Unlike the terrifying artificial intelligence network in the famed Arnold Schwarzenegger films, the robot in this situation was controlled by a human, much like a drone, according to the company.
The company insisted in a recap on the YouTube video of the fight that the clip was legit, and not made with AI:

On September 18, 2026 the world’s first Human vs. Robot fight took place in San Francisco, hosted by REK Robot. This is the only official full length fight recap.
Fighting on behalf of all mankind inside the ring was Frankie Lapenna. He has minimal fight experience and does not claim to be a great fighter. He was a great candidate for the match-making because if the day were ever to come when AI robots took over, the average person would also (like him) have minimal fight experience.
The terminator fight AND the predator fight were absolutely not staged. There was no predetermined outcome, both Frankie and Nick, the robot operator were told to try their best.

After receiving global viral attention, many people commented with accusations of AI being used to create and alter this video. This is absolutely not true, everything is 100% real and no AI was used in any capacity to create this video.
REK founder Cix Liv told The Times he hopes the league can “democratize MMA so we can essentially experience the blood sport without anyone getting hurt.”
The league’s next big bout comes Friday, when a pair of robots square off — while armed with blades.
