Balgarianovinite.com CSKA Sofia secured a convincing 3-0 away victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. The match was played at AdjaraBet Arena in Batumi, Georgia, due to the unstable political situation in the Middle East.
CSKA produced a superb first-half performance, their best since the start of the season, and deservedly went into the break with a two-goal lead, thanks to strikes from Max Ebong and Leandro Godoy. In the second half, the Bulgarian side added a third goal through substitute Joel Zwarts to take a commanding advantage ahead of next week’s return leg in Sofia.
The “Reds” took the lead in the ninth minute when Leandro Godoy set up Max Ebong, who advanced into the box and fired a low shot into the bottom-left corner from the edge of the penalty area, leaving goalkeeper Melika with no chance – 1-0 to CSKA.
After half an hour of play, Godoy doubled CSKA’s advantage with a first-time finish. The Argentine forward met the ball on the move after a scramble inside the penalty area and beat the hosts’ goalkeeper for the second time.
In the final minutes of the game, Dutch striker Joel Zwarts received the ball from Pastor and fired a powerful left-footed strike into the Maccabi net to complete the scoring.
With a three-goal advantage heading into the second leg, CSKA are now within touching distance of advancing to the next stage of the Europa League.
