Balgarianovinite.com His music came from the heart, Cuban multi-instrumentalist Alain Perez said before performing at the Bansko Jazz Festival.
“I make my music with all my heart, always in harmony with my soul and drawing on every nuance, pattern and form I know,” Perez said. He also worked as a singer, composer, arranger and producer and performed with Alain Perez y La Orquesta.
Perez won a Latin Grammy, while his latest album, ¡Bingo!, was nominated for both a Grammy Award and a Latin Grammy Award. “This album connects with audiences because it reflects who I am,” Perez said. “I want you to hear my artistic language as an arranger, producer and musician, and what I now represent as a mature artist,” Perez added.
The music he and his orchestra played in Bansko came from the heart and represented a new Cuban generation, Perez said before the concert. It reached the audience with love and passion. Their performance drew on Cuba’s roots and blended jazz with traditional Cuban rhythms.
His orchestra included 17 young musicians. Perez began studying music as a child after his father recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue it. “I started learning traditional Cuban music when I was very young,” Perez said. He joined a large ensemble at nine and later graduated from the National School of Arts in Havana.
Over the years, he worked with some of the biggest names on the international music scene, including Chucho Valdes and the legendary group Irakere, Issac Delgado, Celia Cruz, Paco de Lucia, Omara Portuondo, Chick Corea and Paquito D’Rivera. As a musical director, arranger and producer, he also helped shape numerous Latin music projects.
Valdes discovered him at 17, and Perez became the youngest musician to join Irakere. The musicians he brought to Bansko were young graduates of the National School of Arts in Havana. “They may be young, but they have worked from an early age and meet the high standards I expect,” Perez said. “They are artists with depth, dedication and respect,” Perez added.
Perez said it was especially rewarding to help raw talent develop into a musician. Speaking about the young musicians at the Bansko Jazz Academy, he said genre labels did not matter and were not what mattered most for the future. “First find your roots, then your identity. That is what matters most,” Perez said. He added that jazz influenced all other musical styles.
