Culture Minister Evtim Miloshev said in Sopot, South Central Bulgaria, on Wednesday that nothing could be more moving than Tsar Samuel returning home to Bulgaria. He was commenting on the agreement Bulgaria and Greece on the transfer of the Bulgarian ruler’s remains.
“This is an event that happens once every 1,000 years. We can only be grateful to fate that we are contemporaries of this historic act,” Miloshev said.
The culture ministers of Bulgaria and Greece, Miloshev and Lina Mendoni, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Athens on Tuesday on the reciprocal transfer of historical relics of significance to the two countries, the Greek Ministry of Culture said on its website. Greece will receive 48 ecclesiastical artifacts originating from the Panagia Eikosifoinissa Monastery, the Timios Prodromos Monastery near Serres, and the Holy Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita. The artifacts were brought to Sofia in 1917 during the First World War and have been exhibited or stored at Bulgaria’s National History Museum, according to the statement.
In return, Greece will transfer to Bulgaria the remains discovered at the Basilica of St Achilles in 1965 by Prof. Nikolaos Moutsopoulos and identified as belonging to Bulgarian Tsar Samuel (997-1014), along with the other anthropological material discovered in all four sarcophagi at the basilica.
On the question which artifacts Bulgaria would transfer to Greece and whether they included valuable manuscripts, Miloshev said: “The artifacts are described according to their inventory numbers and the collection of the National History Museum, where they are registered. This is not a commercial transaction. They have emotional value for the monasteries around Serres. What the remains of Tsar Samuel mean to us as a nation, these artifacts mean to the Greek monks who are there. I received an indication of the gratitude of the Metropolitan of Serres and the happiness that these items will be returned to them.”
The Minister invited all Bulgarians to gather on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Sofia’s Battenberg Square “to give a dignified welcome to Bulgarian Tsar Samuel and accompany him on his final journey to the Church of St Sophia.”
“This is a historic moment that calls on us, at least for a while, to be united and to feel this historical and national pride that, after a thousand years, the Bulgarian tsar is returning home. How many nations and peoples can have such a history and such a ceremony,” Miloshev added.
