Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov Wednesday addressed the Naval Academy on their 145th anniversary. “In a rapidly changing world, success belongs to those who can learn, adapt and think strategically,” he said during a ceremony at the Central Military Club in Sofia.
Stoyanov urged cadets and students to stay confident, reminding them they belonged to a community with a strong tradition, knowledge, and the potential to be among the best. “This generation would have to make decisions in an environment where technological superiority, information and speed of response become increasingly important,” he said.
Bulgaria’s security and that of its NATO and European Union allies require not only modern armed forces and advanced equipment, but, above all, well-trained people with knowledge, character, critical thinking skills and the ability to make responsible decisions in complex and unpredictable circumstances, Stoyanov said. “This was where the Naval Academy plays a strategic role,” he added.
Addressing the teaching staff, the minister said that behind every well-trained officer and every scientific achievement stood the professionalism, dedication and perseverance of those who impart knowledge and shape individuals.
Stoyanov called the Naval Academy a model of professionalism and dignity and a key institution in Bulgaria’s maritime history. He said its 145-year legacy demonstrated continuity, resilience and the ability to meet the challenges of changing times.
The Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy traces its history to 1881, when Bulgaria’s first Maritime School was established in Ruse to train technical personnel for the navy. The institution moved to Varna in 1900 and, after several reorganisations, became a higher naval education institution; it was named after poet and academy graduate Nikola Vaptsarov in 1949 and has borne its present name since 1991.
