Balgarianovinite.com A digital twin of the Buzludzha monument will be unveiled at the upcoming Open Buzludzha Festival, taking place at the historic peak from August 14-16, architect Dora Ivanova, founder of the Buzludzha Project Foundation, told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) on Friday. The foundation is both the organizer of the festival and the creator of the digital model.
Until the monument has been structurally secured and reopened to visitors, the digital model will allow people to explore its interior spaces, architecture, symbolism, and history. Accessible from any phone or computer, it enables users to virtually step inside the monument and experience it remotely.
Visitors will be able to move freely through every part of the building and even travel back in time to see it as it once appeared. This is the first comprehensive digital restoration of the former Monument House of the Bulgarian Communist Party on Mt Buzludzha, with all sculptures, mosaics, and architectural elements fully reconstructed. The restoration was made possible thanks to photographs provided by Bedros Azinyan, one of the monument’s official photographers during its years of operation, allowing the digital recreation to closely match its original appearance.
The digital twin also features interactive information points, Ivanova explained. By selecting individual elements, visitors can access additional information, listen to interviews, and hear firsthand accounts from people involved in the monument’s construction, operation, and history. These stories present multiple perspectives on the site’s past, combining historical facts, the way the monument was presented during its active years, and contemporary interpretations of its significance.
“We bring these different perspectives together to encourage people to think critically about history and the messages this monument conveys,” Ivanova said.
Another feature of the digital twin allows visitors to explore different future scenarios for the Buzludzha monument. In addition to the virtual tour, users can examine a three-dimensional aerial model of the structure and learn more about its architecture and engineering.
“This monument is an extraordinary achievement in both structural engineering and artistic design. With the digital model, people will literally be able to take apart every component to better understand how it was built,” Ivanova explained.
The digital ecosystem also includes an interactive map bringing together the region’s main historical, cultural, and tourist attractions. Its goal is to encourage visitors who come specifically for Buzludzha to discover more about the Valley of Roses and the Valley of the Thracian Kings, as well as the surrounding natural landscapes and landmarks.
“We believe this map will help integrate the monument into the Valley’s broader cultural and tourism destination,” Ivanova added.
The final element of the digital ecosystem is an on-site audio guide. At various points around the monument, visitors will be able to listen to its history. The guide will be freely accessible, allowing the nearly 50,000 people who visit the Buzludzha monument each year to gain a deeper understanding of its history and significance.
The digital twin was developed by the Buzludzha Project Foundation in collaboration with Tornado Studios as part of the international project Developing an Inclusive Process for Communicating Dissonant Heritage, funded through the European Union’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme.
As the lead organization of the international consortium, the Buzludzha Project Foundation partnered with the University of Bologna and its Faculty of Architecture, the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) of the University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation, ATRIUM – Architecture of Totalitarian Regimes of the 20th Century in Europe’s Urban Memory, certified cultural route of the Council of Europe, and EuroClio, European Association of History Educators.
This year’s Open Buzludzha Festival will be held under the motto Sense the Future and celebrate the launch of the monument’s conservation and restoration project, carried out jointly by the Municipality of Kazanlak, the Stara Zagora Regional Administration, and the Buzludzha Project Foundation.
Throughout the three-day festival, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities while learning more about the monument’s history and the vision for its future.
