Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Georgi Valchev, met with the new UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria, Mioh Nemoto, on Thursday. The discussion covered the longstanding partnership between Bulgaria and UNICEF, current challenges facing the education system, and future directions for cooperation, according to the Ministry’s press office.
“We cannot expect teachers to handle, on their own, all the challenges children face in contemporary society. Joint efforts are required from educational institutions, families, and other relevant organizations”, said Valchev. He added that the Ministry of Education and Science will continue policies aimed at improving the training of both current and future educators, ensuring they possess increasingly comprehensive skills for working with children. He stressed that to achieve long-term change, the work of institutions must go beyond the successful implementation and reporting of projects; instead, the results achieved and the innovative approaches adopted should be integrated into the system as sustainable practices.
Another topic discussed was the need to strike a balance in the use of new technologies within the educational process – ensuring they are applied judiciously and in an age-appropriate manner, so as to effectively support children’s learning and development. Special attention was devoted to preschool education, which lays the foundations for key skills and habits through play, social interaction, and various activities. “An individual approach is paramount in early childhood development; it ensures that children do not lose interest or motivation for learning from their very first years – a loss that could otherwise negatively impact subsequent stages of their education,” stated the Minister.
The meeting also addressed early language support for children, mental health, inclusive education, and the need for collaborative efforts in these areas. UNICEF reaffirmed its commitment to providing ongoing support and contributing its expertise to address challenges and create better opportunities for children and students.
