The European Commission on Monday provided an additional EUR 130 million for counter-drone systems as part of efforts to strengthen surveillance at the EU’s external borders and improve the response to emerging security threats.
The Commission said it had already allocated nearly EUR 420 million for surveillance drones for the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). This brings total funding for drone surveillance and counter-drone technologies to more than EUR 500 million.
Earlier this year, the EU took steps to strengthen the monitoring and protection of its airspace and critical infrastructure against malicious drone threats, including by establishing a centre of excellence to support innovation in the field.
EU Member States also plan to organise joint procurement of counter-drone systems under funding for common defence projects, the Commission said.
