Balgarianovinite.com An exhibition dedicated to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s unrealized “Over the River” project is on display at the Linda and Guy Pieters Foundation gallery in Knokke, Belgium, the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation said in a post on its Facebook page.
The exhibition traces the history of the project through collages, drawings, photographs, documents and original elements from the project, the post said.
The idea for “Over the River” emerged in 1992, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude worked on bringing it to fruition for 25 years. Christo abandoned the project in 2017 after five years of legal battles.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude conceived the project for the Arkansas River in southern Colorado. They planned to suspend 9.5 kilometres of silvery, translucent fabric panels high above the river, according to the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation website.
“Over the River” remains an unrealized project by the two artists, known for their large-scale temporary installations in public spaces. Although it was never completed, the project was developed over several decades and ranks among their significant artistic undertakings, the website christojeanneclaude.net also said.
June 13, 2025 marked the 90th anniversary of the births of Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude. 2025 also saw three major anniversaries related to their work – the 40th anniversary of the wrapping of the Pont Neuf (or New Bridge) in Paris, the 30th anniversary of the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin and the 20th anniversary of The Gates installation in New York. In connection with these anniversaries, LIK, BTA’s magazine dedicated to literature, art and culture, devoted its June 2025 issue to the two artists.
The Bulgarian-language edition was premiered in June 2025 at the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Contemporary Art Centre in Gabrovo, the hometown of Christo Javacheff.
The LIK magazine issue “Christo and Jeanne-Claude at 90 in Eternity” was published in English, German and French.
The German-language edition was presented in December 2025 at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute (BCI) in Berlin by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev. The French-language edition of the special issue dedicated to Christo and Jeanne-Claude was presented in Paris in June 2026 at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in the French capital. BTA Director General Kiril Valchev took part in the event, which was held during the La Caverne du Pont Neuf art installation by French artist JR, paying tribute to the work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The installation was also inspired by their “The Pont Neuf Wrapped” project, created in 1985.
The publication of the French-language edition of LIK magazine was made possible with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Institute of Air Transport Ltd., Sts Constantine and Helena Holding AD and INORCOAT.
