Balgarianovinite.com Speaking on Bulgarian National Television on Saturday, caretaker Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky described the April 19 snap parliamentary elections as “the fairest and most transparent so far.” “They signaled a renewed willingness among citizens to vote,” she added, noting that this marks the beginning of stronger engagement of Bulgarians in the electoral process.
“Abroad, 200,000 Bulgarian citizens cast their ballots, despite the limits Parliament imposed on the number of voting sections in countries outside the European Union. By comparison, 150,000 people voted in the previous elections, when no such limits were in place, Neynsky noted.
As to rising prices, she said the trend is not linked to the adoption of the euro, but rather to speculative increases that began well before its introduction. “It is not the euro that is the reason for rising prices, but the failure of regulatory mechanisms to prevent and control the process,” Neynsky said.
Commenting on the EUR 90 billion EU loan to Ukraine, the caretaker Foreign Minister said that if Ukraine is unable to repay it, the funds would come from surpluses in the EU’s general budget – not from national budgets or allocations to individual Member States. “Bulgaria is not taking on any financial obligations. Even in the worst-case scenario there would be no financial burden for Bulgaria,” she noted.
