It is not enough for Bulgaria merely to participate: it must clearly define its role, contribute to the security and stability of the alliances to which its belongs, and demonstrate its added value, Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova said here on Wednesday. She was speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Honorary Consuls in Bulgaria, her Ministry reported.
Petrova emphasized the importance of Bulgaria’s membership in the European Union and NATO for the country’s security, stability, and the protection of its national interests.
Petrova stressed that the complex security environment, ongoing international conflicts, and growing economic uncertainty require clear priorities, resilient institutions, and the consistent safeguarding of Bulgaria’s strategic interests. She added that the country has the potential to be a key regional player that offers solutions, builds partnerships, and transforms its strategic location into concrete opportunities for connectivity, security, and economic development.
At the meeting, Petrova outlined three priority areas for the Foreign Ministry’s work: strengthening economic diplomacy, modernizing and digitizing consular services, and more effectively allocating diplomatic resources in line with current economic and geopolitical realities. Emphasis was also placed on the need to complement the traditional political dialogue with Bulgaria’s partners with a concrete economic agenda aimed at unlocking new opportunities, attracting investment, and supporting Bulgarian businesses in international markets.
Another key topic was the importance of active cooperation with honorary consuls, given their experience, contacts, and familiarity with the local environment. Petrova believes they can contribute both to the development of bilateral relations and to translating those relations into tangible economic and social benefits. Foreign policy must be balanced and pragmatic yet clearly focused on our own interests, the Minister noted.
Discussions also covered Bulgaria’s hosting of the 2027 Regional Connectivity Summit. This event will provide an opportunity to place specific regional projects within a broader European framework and to reinforce the country’s position as an active player in regional connectivity and security.
