Parliament will debate Civil Procedure Code amendments at second reading on Wednesday. A scheduled hearing of Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev will take place on Thursday.
The hearing, proposed by Progressive Bulgaria, will examine allegations of improper practices in public procurement for guardrails, including claims that money paid under the contracts was used to finance flights taken by Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) Chair Peevski. MPs are also expected to ask how much the flights cost, how they were invoiced, who paid for them and whether other parties were connected to the payments.
At a September 18 briefing on anti-corruption measures, Demerdzhiev said that companies supplying guardrails had diverted funds to a shell company, which then paid for Peevski’s private flights. Peevski rejected the allegations.
Parliament rejected a separate MRF proposal to question Demerdzhiev about an addendum to a public procurement contract for Bulgarian identity documents and the party’s allegations concerning 411 properties acquired over the past decade by Demerdzhiev, his family and companies linked to them.
The National Assembly also rejected a Vazrazhdane proposal for a Thursday hearing of State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets Chair Vladimir Ivanov on the sustained rise in wholesale food prices and the outlook for basic food prices through the end of 2026.
Another Vazrazhdane proposal sought a Thursday hearing of Justice Minister Nikolay Naydenov on measures to protect Bulgarian citizens and strategically important sites from sabotage, safeguard judicial independence in cases involving foreign nationals, and prevent interference by the foreign states concerned. It was also rejected.
MPs rejected a Continue the Change (CC) proposal to add the party’s Road Traffic Act amendment bill to the agenda.
Wednesday’s agenda also includes the second reading of amendments to the Commercial Register and Register of Non-Profit Legal Entities Act and the first reading of bills amending the Protection Against the Harmful Impact of Chemical Substances and Mixtures Act.
