GERB-UDF called in a declaration on Friday on the parliamentary majority to reconsider its decision and allow a representative of the Foreign Ministry to be heard regarding the UN declaration on Ukraine and Bulgaria’s position. Earlier, with the votes of the Progressive Bulgaria (PB) parliamentary group, Democratic Bulgaria’s request to hear the Foreign Minister or a deputy foreign minister regarding the declaration on Ukraine signed at the UN was rejected.
According to Georg Georgiev, “something unpleasant” had happened which would otherwise have been a matter of the normal agenda but would now turn into a scandal for weeks to come. “In this case, we are talking about the highest international forum,” the MP and former Foreign Minister stressed. “The worst possible strategy, the biggest political mistake that can be made, is to hide an issue, sweep it under the carpet, or use the strength of the majority to prevent the chamber from discussing it. That is what you have just done,” Georgiev said.
“If with Kyiv we could have assumed that you were still inexperienced, that it was not yet clear exactly what the Government’s positions were, and if with the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ you again found yourselves in some kind of cognitive dissonance, now, during the UN session, you do not have that freedom. After several months in government, you have no opportunity for interpretations or off-the-cuff statements about how Bulgaria should position itself on the international stage, whether it is joining one international act or another,” the GERB-UDF declaration said.
Georgiev added that, in order to help the majority, which was probably wondering whether the Bulgarian Government, through the Foreign Ministry, was right to have Bulgaria join the joint statement at the UN, or whether President Iotova, who claims this is not true, was right, he would play a recording of remarks by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas as part of the joint statement on behalf of 50 UN Member States supporting Ukraine. Bulgaria was mentioned among those countries in the statement, the MP stressed, and asked who was right – Iliana Iotova, who says that Bulgaria did not sign the statement, or the Foreign Ministry, which claims otherwise.
“I commend the Government of Rumen Radev and Rumen Radev himself – he has been consistent and steadfast in his support for Ukraine and condemnation of Russia. He did this in Kyiv, through Velislava Petrova-Chamova, by joining the declaration supporting Ukraine, and he has done it again now at the UN,” Georgiev said. “The question, however, is why does this make you ashamed and concerned? Why does it make you refuse to allow a Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for the relevant area to come to the plenary chamber and explain Bulgaria’s position?” Georgiev asked Progressive Bulgaria. According to him, this is being done for the sole purpose of serving the current election campaign.
