Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) wants the Smithsonian to preserve giant banners bearing President Donald Trump’s face and other administration “artifacts” as historical relics for a future exhibit documenting what he calls an era of “authoritarian narcissism.”
Raskin introduced legislation Tuesday directing the Smithsonian Institution to collect material from both Trump’s presidencies that reflects what the Democrat describes as the “rise of government propaganda, corruption and authoritarianism.”
The “Preserving and Remembering the History of Trump and other Tyrants Act” would lay the groundwork for a permanent exhibition at the National Museum of American History.

Among the items specifically targeted for preservation are oversized banners featuring Trump that have been displayed outside federal agencies, along with signage ordered by the administration for Smithsonian museums.
“Unlike President Trump’s project of censoring, whitewashing and fictionalizing American history, my legislation will forever preserve his manifestations of authoritarian narcissism and his propagandistic assault on American history and American democracy,” Raskin said.
He continued in a statement on his website: “To avoid repeating this descent into authoritarianism, we must study this corrupt President’s actions and allow the public to learn about the numerous tools he deployed while attempting to remake American history in his own image and according to his own autocratic and white nationalist beliefs.”
The measure follows a Trump administration push to install signs outside the National Museum of American History warning visitors that museum presentations can reflect curators’ “personal, radical ideologies.”
Raskin’s bill would direct Smithsonian officials to preserve those signs as well as Trump banners currently hanging at federal buildings, photographs and video footage, and personal accounts from Americans who opposed what the legislation characterizes as a rise in authoritarianism.
It would also authorize the Smithsonian secretary to collect other material deemed historically significant. Separately, the proposal directs the National Park Service to remove signage placed near the National Museum of American History without congressional approval.
