Presidential candidate Ivan Hristanov and his vice-presidential running mate Stoyanka Cherkezova concluded their election campaign on Friday in Plovdiv. Their meeting with citizens was held under the slogan “There Is Now a Choice in Plovdiv Too”.
Hristanov said: “Assoc. Prof. Cherkezova and I stand out with a genuine strategy and programme for constitutional changes, including abolishing the post of Prosecutor General, a state free of corruption, and a clean environment, water and air.” The tandem propose that the Presidency host a national round-table discussion on “The Bulgarian Ideal, National Cause and National Doctrine”.
“Not my ideal or that of any political party, but one representing the entire Bulgarian people, because we have no ideal, cause or doctrine and have been wandering aimlessly for 36 years, while our country is going up in flames,” the presidential candidate said.
According to Hristanov, the President has important powers to act as a corrective, which he would use by vetoing any law written for oligarchs rather than Bulgarians and naming the oligarchs and the schemes involved, as he said he had done in his roles as a minister, public figure and MP. Hristanov stressed that he would respond forcefully to any attempt to appoint people to senior judicial positions who failed to meet high moral standards and the expectations of the Bulgarian people.
Hristanov described the election campaign as “extremely dirty”, saying that scandals and compromising material had prevailed over constructive debate. He also highlighted the repeated refusal of the leading candidates to take part in debates.
