The first edition of the Sofia 1K Run, a new one-kilometre road race in central Sofia, will take place on October 4, a week before the Sofia Marathon, the organizers said.
The format is inspired by popular one-mile urban races in London and New York but uses a one-kilometre distance. Participants will compete in separate heats based on their declared level and expected finishing time, allowing both experienced runners and people taking part in their first race to compete over the same distance.
Among the entrants is Martin Prodanov, Bulgaria’s national record holder in the 1,500 metres. Prodanov is the son of former middle-distance runner Svetlin Prodanov and Olympic biathlon champion Ekaterina Dafovska.
The Sofia 1K Run course will start and finish on General Gurko Street and pass close to the Vasil Levski National Stadium and Eagles’ Bridge. The course has been measured and certified by World Athletics.
The main programme will be preceded by the Sofia 1K Kids Run for children under 12, with age-appropriate distances of 80, 150, 250 and 500 metres.
A dedicated fan zone will offer children’s athletics demonstrations using adapted equipment under the guidance of coaches and instructors from Darko Athletics Team. Music and other activities are also planned as part of the event.
The organizers hope to establish the Sofia 1K Run as an annual city race with its own identity.
“Major cities have their iconic one-mile races. We want Sofia to have its own kilometre – a distance accessible enough to attract new people to running, but fast and challenging enough to appeal to top athletes,” said race organizer and Darko Team sports club President Dimitar Tasev.
