Speaking to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) on Monday, archaeologist Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences said that interdisciplinary studies would establish whether there is a family relationship and determine whether the remains brought from Greece to Bulgaria on Saturday include those of Gavril Radomir, Tsar Samuel’s son, and Ivan Vladislav, Samuel’s nephew. On October 3, three coffins were transported from Greece to Bulgaria – the first containing the remains of Tsar Samuel (997-1014), and the other two containing remains of members of his family.
A range of interdisciplinary studies will be conducted both in Bulgaria and abroad on the remains of Tsar Samuel and his family by a team of scientists led by Vagalinski.
“The studies will not be limited to DNA analysis only. We are talking about chemical analysis, isotope studies and other research that will help us learn as much as possible. Two analyses have already been conducted on Samuel – interdisciplinary studies rather than just physical anthropology, which was our main focus at this stage. This is a lengthy procedure that involves many details,” the professor said.
New findings and data from the examination will be presented at a news conference on October 8 at the BTA National Press Club in Sofia. “At every stage when we have information, we should share it with the public in Bulgaria. People need to be informed, and this is our responsibility as scientists,” Vagalinski added.
Under an agreement between Sofia and Athens, Greece handed over to Bulgaria the remains identified as belonging to Tsar Samuel, which were discovered in 1969 in the Basilica of St Achilles on the island of Agios Achilleios in the Small Prespa Lake by Greek archaeologist Prof. Nikolaos Moutsopoulos. Bulgaria, in return, handed over 48 church relics to Greece.
