Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev and his Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner discussed improving security in the Black Sea region and strengthening security cooperation between the two countries, the Ministry’s press office said on Monday. Demerdzhiev is on a working visit to Austria.
The Minister noted that security along the Bulgarian-Turkish border has significantly improved and that fewer migrants are crossing it. “We have succeeded in establishing a trilateral dialogue and cooperation between Bulgaria, Turkiye, and Greece. One of the most problematic routes in the EU has become one of the Union’s best-protected external borders,” Demerdzhiev said.
Karner noted that in recent years, Bulgaria has invested heavily in strengthening the security of its external borders, and due to these efforts, this has become one of the best-protected sections of the Union’s external border. Demerdzhiev expressed his gratitude for the EU’s assistance and for the participation of a contingent of Austrian officers, who joined Bulgarian officers and Frontex representatives in securing the border.
“With my colleague, and I can say friend, Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner, we discussed a number of issues related to bilateral relations and the development of security within the EU. Bulgaria is already at a very high level, but we aim to deepen and build upon this cooperation,” Demerdzhiev added.
