ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday slammed the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday for the way the team handled the injury of star quarterback Jalen Hurts.
The day before, the Eagles announced that Hurts would miss the rest of the season due to blood clots in his lungs. He previously missed the team’s Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers when a superficial blood clot was discovered in his calf, but additional testing revealed his condition was much more serious.
Shortly after the news that Hurts’s season was over, it was reported that rested very little before the Eagles game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London because it was in the hospital the night before. Despite doctors confirming the presence of a blood clot, Hurts played in the game and even flew back to Philadelphia with the team. Doctors generally advise against air travel with blood clots due to extensive periods of immobilization, which slows blood flow and can worsen the condition.
Later that afternoon, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni addressed the media and deferred all questions about Hurts’s injury to team’s medical staff. To Saturday, sending the coach out to face the media was a major mistake.
“Nick Siriani had no business addressing those questions, OK?” Saturday said on First Take. “Not even a little bit. He’s not involved in player health and safety. He is the head coach of the Eagles. He is told by medical staff whether a player is ‘up’ or whether a player is ‘down.’ He doesn’t control whether a guy gets on a plane to go anywhere. He knows little to nothing, and it was set up that way by the Players Association and the NFL that no coach, whether it’s a head coach, position coach, coordinator, has any input into a player’s health or who’s gonna be up or down for a game; so Nick Sirianni was the scapegoat on this.”
Saturday then called out the Eagles for making Sirianni ask questions to which he had no answers.

“Shame on you, Eagles,” Saturday said. “Shame on you, Philadelphia, for not putting a medical professional, who actually had input into that decision, getting up to field these questions. It is the head coach– you see this from Andy Reid sitting up there, whether it’s halftime or end of game: ‘Talk to the doctors. I have no idea if he’s going to be up or down. I’ll wait to hear.’ That’s the same for Sirianni.”
