Transforming cultural heritage into tourism opportunities, preserving identity and shaping sustainable cities were among the topics discussed at Monday’s international forum on “Azerbaijan – Bulgaria: Urban Planning, Architecture, Tourism, Heritage, Innovation and Cities of the Future”, part of the Diplomacy of Wonders initiative. The event was organized by the Cultural Heritage Society, which is the Europa Nostra Country Representative, and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Bulgaria, with the support of the Bulgarian Ministry of Tourism.
Azerbaijan and Bulgaria have significant potential to turn their shared interest in cultural heritage into concrete tourism opportunities, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador Elmar Mammadov said at the forum. He added that the two countries can develop joint cultural and architectural tourism routes, promote their historical cities and UNESCO sites, exchange expertise in monument restoration and sustainable urban development, and strengthen cooperation between cities, universities, architects, tour operators and tourism organizations. The diplomat stressed that Bulgaria offers a remarkable range of tourism opportunities and pointed out the need to work together to promote these attractions among Azerbaijani visitors, while encouraging more Bulgarian tourists to discover Azerbaijan. He said he believed that stronger tourism ties, together with closer cooperation in education and cultural exchange, can help create favourable conditions for restoring a sustainable direct air link between Baku and Sofia.
Deputy Tourism Minister Mariela Modeva expressed confidence that cultural heritage is a valuable resource for the sustainable development of cities and for the creation of new opportunities for tourism. She also made the point that Bulgaria and Azerbaijan have significant potential to deepen their cooperation in cultural tourism, architecture and heritage preservation. “Through the exchange of good practices, joint initiatives and partnerships, we can turn the wealth of our cultures into a lasting competitive advantage,” said Modeva.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ivanka Tasheva said the partnership between the two countries has already yielded many tangible results, especially in energy security and connectivity. She highlighted the significant potential in transport, infrastructure, digital networks, trade and people-to-people contacts. The development of the Trans-Caspian Corridor, also known as the Middle Corridor, is of particular importance, connecting Asia and Europe and strengthening the strategic role of the two countries, Tasheva said. Among the possibilities for closer Bulgarian-Azerbaijani cooperation, the Deputy Minister outlined partnerships between cities and local communities, the development of sustainable cultural tourism, as well as innovations and sustainable urban development. Through the exchange of expertise and good practices, the two countries can explore how digital technologies and innovative approaches to the conservation of monuments can make cities more inclusive, accessible and sustainable.
MP Hamid Hamid, Chair of the Bulgaria-Azerbaijan Friendship Group in Parliament, stated that parliamentary relations between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan are active, traditionally friendly and develop within the framework of strategic partnership. He added that for Bulgaria, Azerbaijan is a key partner in the South Caucasus region, and the development of relations between the two countries has significant value both for bilateral cooperation and for strengthening ties between Europe and the region.
Neli Andreeva, Deputy Chair of the parliamentary Committee on Transport and Communications, and Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Vice-President Emmanuel Moutafov also took part in the forum.
